Urban skylines. Spring-fed rivers. Wilderness lakes. Sea caves. Big rivers. Quiet neighborhood water.

Outdoor Funky looks at paddling as an adventure you can build from almost anywhere — with the right place, planning, skills, and conditions.

Clear Water & Spring Paddling

Weeki Wachee River, Florida: Clear spring water, wildlife, and a gentle current make this one of Florida’s classic paddling experiences. Official park information.

Ichetucknee & Florida Springs: Florida’s spring country offers canoeing, kayaking, SUP, tubing, and clear-water exploration. Official Ichetucknee paddling info.

Florida Paddling Trails: Florida manages more than 4,100 miles across 60+ state-designated paddling trails, including spring rivers, coastal routes, and wilderness water. Official trail directory.

Wild & Rural Paddling

Boundary Waters, Minnesota: Canoe-country wilderness where paddling and camping are the trip. Portages, remote lakes, and route planning make it a true destination adventure. Official permit & planning information.

Niobrara National Scenic River, Nebraska: A classic Great Plains paddling destination near Valentine with canoeing, kayaking, tubing, waterfalls, high bluffs, and camping along the river corridor. NPS paddling guide.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri: The spring-fed Current and Jacks Fork rivers combine clear water, floating, camping, caves, and Ozark scenery. NPS floating guide.

Buffalo National River, Arkansas: A free-flowing river through the Ozarks with paddling that changes by season, rainfall, and river section. NPS paddling guide.

Everglades National Park, Florida: Freshwater marsh, mangrove forests, Florida Bay, the 10,000 Islands, and routes ranging from a few hours to multi-day wilderness trips. NPS canoe & kayak trails.

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia: A completely different paddling experience — swamp channels, wildlife, marked canoe routes, and overnight wilderness canoe camping. Official refuge planning.

Black Canyon National Water Trail, Nevada / Arizona: Paddle the Colorado River below Hoover Dam through a desert canyon with beaches, caves, coves, hot springs, and wildlife. NPS water trail guide.

Lake Powell / Glen Canyon, Arizona / Utah: Desert-canyon kayaking with side canyons, primitive shoreline camping, and launch options across Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. NPS kayaking guide.

Urban Paddling

Seattle — Lake Union: Paddle with a skyline, houseboats, a working waterfront, and urban parks around you. Lake Union Park includes hand-carry boat access. Seattle Parks.

Washington, D.C. — Potomac River: Paddle close to the nation’s capital from access points and marinas along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. NPS Potomac kayaking.

San Antonio — San Antonio River: Designated paddling areas include sections of the River Walk, Mission Reach, Medina River, and city lakes. City paddling information.

The point: paddling does not have to mean remote wilderness. A kayak or SUP can be one of the coolest ways to see a city.

Big Water & Sea Kayaking

Apostle Islands, Wisconsin: Lake Superior sea kayaking can include islands, beaches, lighthouses, and sea caves. This is beautiful but serious cold-water paddling that demands the right boat, gear, weather judgment, and skills. NPS kayaking guide.

Future Outdoor Funky additions can include coastal paddling, protected bays, bioluminescent trips, desert reservoirs, and other destination-water experiences across the country.

The Outdoor Funky Paddling Philosophy

Find the idea. Understand why it is special. Then go to the official source and plan it well.

We want to feature beginner-friendly water and bigger challenges — urban and rural, lakes and rivers, spring runs and wilderness routes — while being clear that water levels, weather, current, temperature, access, permits, boat traffic, and skill requirements matter.

Adventure should feel possible, not reckless.
